Ease that midlife crisis itch with some unique travel experiences. Get yourself booked on an expedition trekking through the Malaysian jungle and conquering the three peaks of Borneo.
The third largest island in the world, home to the oldest rainforest on Earth and very rich in biodiversity Borneo is well worth exploring.
Before your departure you’ll spend a weekend at a Tropical Forest Expedition training camp learning essential jungle survival skills, navigation, lost procedures and trying out life in a hammock.
Then it’s off to Sabah, the northern state of Borneo to begin your 14 day expedition. Departing from the region’s capital Kota Kinabalu you’ll head into the jungle and trek to the summit of Gunung Tamboyukon. At 2579 metres this is the third highest of the 3 peaks but is rarely climbed.
Continue on to Trus Madi, the second highest mountain in the country at 2642 metres. Again, rarely climbed and offering stunning views across the rainforest to the third and final peak of your challenge. The highest mountain in south east Asia at 4095 metres Mount Kinabalu is a popular climb with tourists but your ascent will be via the less used and more dramatic Mesilau route. It’s then back down the mountain for the return to Kota.
Qualified mountain leaders will guide you on your trek and you’ll be pitching camp at remote spots in the jungle. All food, supplements and equipment is supplied by your support team.
Extend your trip and continue exploring Borneo with a wildlife safari to see the Orangutans at Sepilok or go diving off the beaches of Kota Kinabalu.
The Borneo 3 Peaks Challenge is scheduled for October 2011 and organised by specialist travel agency Fieldskills. Based in the UK and Borneo they offer unique overseas travel adventures along with UK expedition training camps for individuals and small groups.
If you’d rather explore the jungle on 2 wheels Fieldskills are also organizing a mountain bike expedition circumnavigating Mount Kinabalu. The six day trip will negotiate jungle trails, rivers and beaches, visit isolated villages and rural market towns.
For a taste of life in the jungle you can join the expedition training camps in the UK. Spend a weekend learning how to set up your own unsupported camp, navigation skills and how to deal with emergency scenarios.
Details of all the expeditions and camps are available at the Fieldskills website or by calling them on 0845 293 7296.
