With it’s mountain ranges, rainforests, lakes, sandy beaches and coral reefs there’s more to this island than it’s high tech cities and booming economy.
Taiwan was previously known as Formosa from the Portugese Liha Formosa meaning beautiful island. It’s mountain ranges include the highest peak in the far east Jade Mountain. You can hike through the Yushan national park to take in spectacular views from Jade Mountain to the straits of the island.
The canyons and waterfalls to the east bring opportunities for incredible white water rafting while the sandy beaches of its southern coastline offer some fine diving and snorkeling.
Cuisine is an adventure in itself with delights such as basked squid feet, fried insects and catmouse soup likely to feature on your restaurant menu.
Taiwan’s climate is a tropical one with an annual monsoon and the occasional typhoon so time your visit accordingly. June to September is your best bet. Flight time from the UK is around 12 hours with a connection usually in Bangkok.

Bespoke tours of Taiwan are on offer from overseas adventure travel specialists Black Tomato. Check out their website for further details.
