There are many articles out there arguing for and against the existence of the midlife crisis for men. A quick google of the term offers up a whole host of literature and comment on the subject. While many psychologists appear to go along with Elliott Jacques, who first coined the phrase in 1965 there are an equal number of counter arguments and also suggestions that the phrase should be renamed to truly reflect the symptoms people are now experiencing within modern society.
Wikipedia quote evidence to suggest those crisis symptoms are not age related, scientists also doubt the mid life crisis is real as do many prominent commentators. We believe the desire for a new challenge, a new experience and even a new way of life doesn’t constitute much of a crisis.
The idea for this site came to me during a period of personal reflection that followed accusations of a mid-life crisis. When I hit my 40th birthday I bought myself a car that I’d always liked the look of and dare I say desired. Nothing flash but a nice 2-seater GT sport coupe. Now while most of my friends nodded in approval there were some who screamed ‘midlife crisis’. Up until then the thought hadn’t even crossed my mind but the seed was then sown.
A couple of months later I fulfilled another minor ambition which was to fly a helicopter. A great experience, which I thoroughly recommend but this also apparently, slips onto the crisis cliché list.
After taking a good hard look at myself the conclusion I came to was that this was no crisis. I was more content, confident and generally happier than ever. I was just in a position to get on and experience some of the items on my list of things to do before I get to 40. OK so I was running late but hey, I’ll catch up!
My guess is there are loads of people out there looking for a new challenge and also to fulfil those minor ambitions. I’m hoping this site will bring you ideas that will inspire you to get out and experience some of the great adventures life has to offer. Whether it’s volunteering for a charity project overseas, acquiring a new skill, indulging in some overseas adventure travel or taking up a new sport we’ll have details of the best that are on offer.
